Family is a unique system of individuals that come together as a team, while also operating independently to achieve their life’s goals and dreams. Frequently, as our lives grow and change, we may find it harder to communicate our needs, to feel connected, to feel emotionally safe or understood. Family therapy is a type of therapy that aims at maintaining balance in our important relationships, even when they seem challenging as we grow in different directions, or as we try to maintain our loving bond and connectedness, but still maintain our individuality. Additionally, external stressors, such as finances, geographic location, work or school demands, a family trauma, can impose unnecessary stress. Family Therapy aims at providing a safe space where families can come together to openly discuss sensitive topics and resolve interpersonal conflicts in the presence of an experienced, non-judgmental therapist. In family therapy, the focus is not on identifying a “problem person,” but rather on how the family can improve their functioning as a unit, while preserving their value system.
