At EB Psychotherapy we offer neuropsychological evaluations & assessments for Children/Adolescents, Adults and the Elderly. Neuropsychological evaluations & assessments can provide answers to specific cognitive and emotional issues that are impacting your life goals. They can also identify existing strengths that could be better utilized by the individual and incorporated into an overall life plan or treatment plan. At the conclusion of the evaluation/assessment, we will schedule feedback sessions and provide a written report that will explain everything in straightforward terms and provide diagnostic impressions and treatment recommendations.
Dementia is a broad term that is used to describe when a person is having impairment with memory, learning new tasks, planning, problems with language, motor skills and difficulty recognizing familiar people or things. A neuropsychological assessment can help you (and your loved one) identify the reasons behind the symptoms (physical and/or emotional) and develop structure and a plan for the individual’s daily routine that is based on his/her existing strengths and works for him/her.
People of all ages may experience difficulty concentrating and completing tasks at work and/or school due to a learning disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The presence of a learning disorder does not mean that a person cannot achieve academic success. A psychological assessment will shed light into an individual’s cognitive functioning, strengths and areas that may need support, and guide him/her towards using the strengths to build on the areas of weakness and achieve success academically or professionally. Even if the individual is already in treatment, clearly identifying the individual’s cognitive functioning will render the therapist’s treatment plan more effective.
Psychological evaluations are often required before major surgery to ensure that the person is mentally ready and fully comprehending the impact that having this type of surgery will have on his/her life. This evaluation will provide an opportunity to explore the person’s expectations, weigh risks and benefits, set realistic goals and ability to sustain the desired result following surgery.
When a person’s decision-making abilities are called into question, a competency evaluation by a trained mental health professional can help to provide some insight into a person’s ability to exercise sound judgment in order to safely manage his/her medical and financial responsibilities. If the evaluation reveals that the person is truly struggling to make medical, legal and/or financial decisions, then the therapist may make a recommendation that the individual appoint a non-biased conservator (legally appointed representative who manages medical care and/or financial responsibilities) to assist him/her in decision-making processes.
Social Security Disability Evaluations
When someone applies for social security disability benefits, the Social Security Administration requires that a current mental health exam be included with the person’s application. A licensed mental health professional conducts this exam in order to accurately identify and explain the current psychological state of the person applying for benefits. To do so, the individual will be administered a number of psychological tests. A report explaining the results of these tests is included for review with the person’s application.
